Background of the Study
Morphological variation in digital discourse is increasingly evident as users invent new word forms to express contemporary ideas. In Nigeria, hashtag neologisms on Twitter exemplify this trend, where creative combinations of words and symbols forge new linguistic identities. Hashtag neologisms emerge as users blend indigenous language elements with global digital trends, creating novel morphemes that encapsulate cultural and social sentiments (Okoro, 2023). This study appraises morphological variations by examining the formation, dissemination, and semantic impact of hashtag neologisms on Twitter. It compares traditional word-formation processes with innovative digital practices, highlighting how morphological creativity responds to the affordances of the platform. The analysis includes both the structural aspects of these neologisms and their role in facilitating community identity and digital activism. By situating these linguistic phenomena within the broader framework of morphological theory, the study provides insights into the dynamic interplay between digital media and language evolution in Nigeria (Chukwu, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the noticeable proliferation of hashtag neologisms on Twitter, there is limited research on their morphological characteristics and the factors driving their creation. Existing studies often overlook how these digital innovations challenge traditional morphological paradigms. This gap limits our understanding of the mechanisms behind lexical innovation in digital discourse. This study seeks to address these issues by systematically analyzing hashtag neologisms in Nigerian Twitter discourse, providing insights into their formation, adoption, and impact on language evolution (Adeniyi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To analyze the morphological structure of hashtag neologisms on Twitter.

  2. To compare digital word-formation processes with traditional morphology.

  3. To evaluate the cultural and social factors influencing neologism creation.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the key morphological features of hashtag neologisms on Twitter?

  2. How do these features compare with traditional word-formation processes?

  3. What social and cultural factors drive the creation of these neologisms?

Significance of the Study
This study enriches our understanding of digital lexical innovation by examining hashtag neologisms in Nigerian Twitter discourse. Its findings offer theoretical and practical insights for linguists and digital media analysts, shedding light on the interplay between morphology and digital communication (Okoro, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Morphological Variation: Changes in word structure and formation.

  2. Hashtag Neologism: A new word or expression initiated by a hashtag on digital platforms.

  3. Digital Discourse: Communication practices that occur online.
